It's time to get planting to get a bountiful pumpkin harvest for the fall!
There's something magical about growing your own pumpkins, especially when Halloween is just around the corner. Well not really but when we are gardening it is. You have to plan ahead which can be stressful but also it could be so fun. I had some fun when I decided it was time to plant the pumpkin seeds in order to get them for Halloween this year. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a newbie, you can grow pumpkins that are perfect for carving, cooking, or just decorating your porch. I'm really excited to see the results because we picked out some different types of pumpkins to plant.
So why plant pumpkins? They're not only fun to grow but they also have versatile usages. Not only for decorating and Halloween and fall fun. But also they're great for cooking from anywhere to pies, soups, and gravies. You can find many ways to use them. Plus it's extra satisfying when you can harvest pumpkins in the fall season.

We're going to have five different types of pumpkins if they all come in good. That includes Jack O Lantern, Small Sugar, Fairytale, Blue Jarrahdale, and Casper types. We're excited to enjoy each of their diverse shapes, colors, and uses. Here's a little more about each one:
Jack-o'-Lantern: The classic Halloween pumpkin, perfect for carving spooky faces and decorations.
Small Sugar: Also known as pie pumpkins, these smaller pumpkins are ideal for baking and cooking due to their sweet, dense flesh.
Blue Jarrahdale: With their striking blue-gray skin and sweet, orange flesh, these pumpkins are great for both cooking and ornamental purposes.
Fairytale: Known for their flattened, ribbed shape and deep orange flesh, Fairytale pumpkins are excellent for baking and add a whimsical touch to fall displays.
Casper: These ghostly white pumpkins are perfect for unique Halloween decorations and have a smooth, mild flavor suitable for culinary uses.

You need to time your planting right. Right now is the perfect time to get them in for the fruits to be matured for Halloween. So there's your heads up if you want to plant your own pumpkin patch get them in soon at the end of June!
We rototilled the area making sure it was lose and workable. For pumpkins to thrive it needs well drained soil that is fertile. You might have to add something to your soil because the pumpkins are acidic so some might want to check you PH levels of your soil to see if anything needs added.

The pumpkin plants are susceptible to root rot so it is best to plant them in mounds. We did to very long mounds planting the seed in the line. But if you are doing small mounds you don't want to do more the 5 seeds per mound. When they grow no more than 2-3 plant per hill. The Mounds will help with drainage and soil warmth.

The Seeds need to be planted in about 1 inch depth. We went through and made small holes that we could then go through and drop the seed in covering them up with soil after we got each set planted. We planted each kind of pumpkin in a certain section so that there was a little coherency to it even if they all will spread.

Pumpkins need a certain thing at each stage of their lives. The first stage needs nitrogen. I like to do things naturally when I can so to give them nitrogen I sprinkle coffee grounds through the garden area. Because its a great source for a natural nitrogen.
They will need potassium in their next phase which ill use banana peels soaked in water to give them that. Once they start flowering they enter the last phase which is phosphorus you can add a fertilizer made from Chicken and horse manure, bone meal, fish emulsion or rock phosphate. This will help create an abundance of flowerd and fruit.
Consistently watering is key. You want to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Do a deepened water at least once a week and regularly watering in the morning and evening. You'll also want to weed it regularly.

Viola! You'll be on your way to a gorgeous pumpkin patch. Growing pumpkins can be a rewarding experience, especially when you see the fruits of your labor ready for Halloween.
